One of the best parts of summer in Milwaukee is the bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables that we have access to thanks to our proximity to so much farmland. Shopping at farmer’s markets looks different in 2020, but there are still plenty of markets happening every week where you can shop in a careful, distant manner and still provide your family with fresh, locally-produced food.
While in year’s past, a trip to the farmer’s market may have been a family affair with sampling and casual meandering, this year markets are asking that only member of your family shop. Traffic at the stalls is usually one-way, touching of products is not allowed and masks are worn for everyone’s safety.
All markets ask that you not attend if you have a fever or are not feeling well, leave your kids and dogs at home and complete your shopping quickly and efficiently. These guidelines ensure the safety of shoppers and market sellers. While it’s not anyone’s ideal, it ensures that you and your family have fresh, local ingredients to enjoy and that local farmers and producers are able to sustain their businesses through these tough times.
The markets have hand sanitizer stations spread throughout. Make sure you’re avoiding touching the food or your face, maintain six feet of distance and place your money on a table or counter to be retrieved instead of handing it directly to a vendor. Also make sure you’re washing your hands and your produce vigorously when you return home.
Most Milwaukee-area markets run through October. All this information is as correct as we can make it at the time of publishing, but always check individual market websites and Facebook pages for the most up to date information.
